The PBS was amazing and easy to understand the complex genetic story of humankind. The book promised to be more detailed and easy to read. I found the writing to be dry, scientific, and detailed to the point it lost me most of the time. It was hard to follow the science and the author's argument for our journey out of Africa. I am fascinated by the topic, the PBS special was 5 stars, so I was disappointed in the book. The editors let the author down by not having more interesting photos, graphics, and enabling the genius of the work of the author and his storytelling to be transferred into the book. I do not regret the decision to purchase the book, however, it is one of the scientific books on the origins of the universe or the origins of the journey out of Africa that will take more than one reading.

This was a fairly good book and very easy to read.
I am not sure why the author was unwilling to introduce the word/ concept of "haplogroup" or "haplotype."
In point of fact, the book is 15 years old and is already quite dated at this point. The whole human genome has been sequenced and contained something like 8,000 fewer genes than the number that he quoted in his book. Also, the price to have yourself assigned to a haplogroup has fallen so low that people can do it for about $295 (ancestry.dna).
There were no references to articles for further study (which may have been deliberate as this was written for everyday people). I also wonder why he didn't include a chart for the progression of mitochondrial haplogroups (the same way he did for the Y chromosome DNA). To be honest, that single diagram was worth an ENTIRE chapter of words on the explanation of how Australian aboriginals came to live in Australia (a topic that was already discussed in a book that was written several years earlier by Jared Diamond: Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies).
The index was very good.
I can recommend the book at the second hand price ($3.95 as of today). The whole thing takes about 4 hours to read through. If you have already read any books on Pop Genetics, then a lot of this will seem like repetition.
